Our Vignoles grapes are ripe for the picking…and so starts our 2014 harvest!
A crew of six arrived before 6:00 this morning to begin hand-picking our small two acre lot of Vignoles, they hope to avoid the mid-day heat today. We expect to net about a ton of grapes from this lot, however the critters (raccoon, squirrel, turkey and deer) have wreaked havoc on a portion of the vineyard so it may be a little less than a ton.
While the crew is hand-picking, our production team is handling the 16 bins of Vignoles that have made their way to the crush pad via one of our local growers. Our winemaker, Michael, and his team will crush and de-stem the Vignoles grapes, then gently press and allowed to cold-settle overnight.
This is an exciting time of year at the winery, but also a very stressful time. Everyday we will keep our fingers crossed and say a little prayer that the 2014 harvest goes smoothly with no hiccups, no injuries, no mechanical breakdowns and of course we pray that Mother Nature takes it easy on us.
Stay tuned for more on the 2014 harvest!
