Built to Last
Adam Puchta Winery is more than a historic name in Hermann. It is a living family legacy shaped by perseverance, craftsmanship, and generations of commitment to the land. As America’s oldest continuously family-owned farm winery, our story is not only about where we began. It is about how that legacy continues today.
How the Story Began
From Bavaria to Hermann
The Adam Puchta story began in 1839, when the family came to the United States from Bavaria and settled in the Frene Creek Valley near Hermann, where land was purchased for growing grapes.
A Bold Journey West
Before founding his winery, Adam Puchta joined other young men from Hermann in driving cattle to California during the Gold Rush. After selling the cattle and mining for gold, he eventually made his way back home to Missouri.
The Winery Takes Root
After returning to Hermann, Adam purchased land from his father, built a stone-arched wine cellar and press house, and produced the first vintages of Adam Puchta wines in 1855.
A Legacy Carried Across Generations
Built by Generations
As the winery grew, Adam’s son Henry joined the business, and the family expanded production under the name Adam Puchta & Son Wine Co., selling wine throughout the United States and Europe. Missouri was the second-largest wine-producing region in the United States before Prohibition, second only to New York.
Enduring Prohibition
When Prohibition forced the winery to close in 1919, the family turned to farming but preserved what they could. Some equipment was hidden beneath straw, and even a small Norton vineyard survived hidden in the woods.
Still Part of Missouri Wine History
Today, Adam Puchta Winery stands as more than a family business. It remains a meaningful part of Hermann and the larger story of Missouri wine, carrying that legacy forward with every generation.
