Vignoles is a white hybrid grape varietal that is known for its intense tropical flavors and is highly aromatic. When it is made as a dry style wine it has notes of pineapple, orange, lemon, and white peaches. If it is made as a sweeter product more honeyed flavors come out and it becomes very ripe in its fruit character.
Where does Vignoles come from?
Vignoles is a hybrid grape that was created in 1930 and was originally a cross of Seibel (a French-American hybrid grape) and a clone of Pinot Noir. Once it was imported to the United States though, it was found that the version here did not share any genetic markers. It still became a wild success in New York, and in 1970 it was officially named Vignoles. Now it is one of the most popular white grapes in Missouri and one of the top white hybrid grapes in the country. It is the most commonly grown white grape in Missouri and about 15.5% of all grapes grown in Missouri are Vignoles.
How should Vignoles be stored and for how long?
Whether it is a dry or sweet style Vignoles these wines are made to be excellent when drank fresh but also when aged several years. Over time, Vignoles will take on more of a honey characteristic compared to the fresh fruit sensations of a younger bottle. Sweeter styles are best if consumed
When should I drink Vignoles wine?
Vignoles wines are made in many ways so, naturally, there are many different occasions where it serves as the perfect drink. Whether you are outside on a hot day drinking a dry Vignoles or having a glass of it as sweet dessert wine, it is nearly perfect for any drinking occasion.
